Zamzar offers a simple file conversion services to its visitors. Users can upload files from their computer or take files from a URL. The convert to options are very diverse, including PNG, BMP, JPG, TGA, TIFF, PCX, EPS and more for images as well as CSV, DOC, DOCX, HTML, PPT, XML and many more for documents. Zamzar also supports audio and video file types, including WMV, 3GP, MP4 and WAV along with ebook and other file types. The user only has to supply the file, convert to type and an email address. The application sends the converted file to the address provided by the user. Users can also download videos and send files. Those who sign up can access an inbox to organize and manage all of their files. Registered users can also convert larger file sizes and receive priority conversion time.

Zamzar is essentially a firm based out of London, England and was founded by Chris Whyley and others. The name Zamzar was based upon a character ‘Gregor Samsa’ from the book ‘The Metamorphosis’, written by Franz Kafka. The story of the novel is based on a young man who transformed into a giant insect whilst sleeping. Based on this powerful change and transformation, the company decided to name this application as Zamzar.

Zamzar is appreciated for its wide variety of formats. This application assists the users to convert the existing format of a file to the desired format in just a few seconds. Zamzar is preferred over its competitors including Media Converter and Hey! Watch, as it is extremely uncomplicated. Some additional features that add to the popularity of this application are the extensive range of formats, easy to use interface, high quality conversion, video file downloader or converter and no obligation to download any conversion software for its usage. On the downside there are certain annoying features as well that reduces its popularity. Zamzar lacks the feature of optical character recognition, which restricts it from converting the JPEG with text file into actual text file.

The most prominent element on the Zamzar website is an image featuring a pair of colorful chameleons against a solid black background. This contrasts the plain white background of the actual website. Throughout, users find hints of soft blue and green which gives Zamzar a pleasant, calm feel. Users will find advertisements scattered here and there, but this is to be expected from a website offering a free service.

A new user is not required to register to complete a file conversion. However those who would like to access all available features should create an account. This can be done by clicking the blue and white “Register” button tucked into the upper, right hand corner of the homepage. The following page asks the user to choose the “Sign Up” button that corresponds with their desired membership plan. After doing so, the user is asked to provide a first and last name, email address, password, account type (either personal or business), country location and billing information.

Zamzar users are given three membership plans to choose from. The first is a basic plan which costs less than $10 per month and includes up to 200 MB maximum file size, 7 concurrent conversions, 5 GBs of online storage space, high file conversion priority, three day email support response time and access to a personal inbox for file management. The Pro plan costs around $16 per month and includes up to 400 MB file size maximum, 10 concurrent conversions, 20 GBs of storage space, no advertisements, two day email support response time and higher conversion priority level. The Business plan costs around $50 per month and includes 1 GB file maximum size, 15 concurrent conversions, 100 GBs of storage space, highest priority level, SSL security and one day email support response time.
